You can buy live crabs at every seafood market, but in Chinese Nanjing city they are sold in typical street vending machines. Crabs are preserved at a constant 5 degrees Celsius (41 F). So they are sedated, but alive. The crabs from such machines cost about 2 dollars. One can buy crabs in a shopping mall or at subway station and cook them fresh at home. As you will see below there is nothing about being humane when it comes to Chinese business. These vending machines also sell vinegar sous that locals usually eat with crabs. For more delicate people it looks like pets are being sold in vending machines.
