5. Jesse Owens wins gold in Nazi Germany

1936. The Summer Olympics were held in Nazi Germany. Long jumper from the US Jesse Owens won the gold medal, outrunning the German athlete. Owens was black and this fact undermined the Nazi theory of Aryan racial superiority. Hitler was so disappointed that he left the Berlin stadium before the ceremony of awards to escape applauding to black winner. German athletes greeted spectators with the Nazi salute.
